I had the immense pleasure of co-producing the 28th annual National College Comedy Festival at Skidmore College (along with my incredible colleagues Sarah Rabinowitz and Keegan Kelly).
While my day to day job producing the festival was corresponding with the 150+ visiting college comedians (accommodating their travel, housing, tech and food needs), I also designed and illustrated the promotional materials for the event.
With the existing logo and branding already designed by the talented Skidmore alumni Adam Fisher Cox, I was free to just brainstorm ideas for illustrations. Similar to my processes in 2016, I was initially stuck illustrating things that were symbolic of "comedy" or "college." These first ideas all felt too cliche and (ironically) unfunny.
In the end, I decided to spend an entire day filling a sketchbook with anything that made me laugh. I wound up illustrating this over-the-top image of a full grown person at the wheel of a Barbie jeep. I feel it conveys the college comedy scene perfectly - adults who unashamedly cling to a decidedly goofy (or youthful) hobby. I'm happy to have produced something that made people stop to laugh, or even raise an eyebrow and think: "what is this festival all about?"
